This is Esterzili, a small, picturesque town whose
historic centre preserves in tact the charm of Sardinia’s historical
dwellings. The principal appeal of Esterzili lies in its position 1200
meters above sea level on Mount Santa Vittoria. |
 |
| There are numerous archaeological sites and churches to be
visited in Esterzili, as well as the lovely murals which adorn the town
and add to its characteristic charm. |
 |
| Thanks to its climate, dry in winter and cool in summer,
Esterzili is an ideal destination for those wishing to indulge in healthy
excursions in the tranquillity of uncontaminated nature. |
 |
|
The territory of Esterzili is rich in archaeological
monuments of exceptional interest: the Menhirs, the Dolmens, the Domus de
Janas, Tombs of the Giants and several temples which feature wells and are
associated with the water cult. But the jewel in the crown of the
architecture of Esterzili is the Rectangular Temple at "Megaton in
antis" of Domu ’e Urxia which, according to legend, commemorates
Urxia, the cruel sorceress who guards one cask laden with gold, alongside
another filled with "Is Muscas Macceddas", or "killer flies". |
 |
| Small Nuragi bronzes of exceptional interest have recently
been discovered in the Temple of Domus ’e Urxia, and a bronze tablet of
remarkable historical importance has been found in the area of Cort’e
Lucetta. |
 |
| Sant'Ignazio da Laconi. |
| The actual parsh church is consecrated to St. Ignatius of
Laconi. Its architectural lines and the abuse of reinforced concrete
betray its very recent construction: indeed the building, erected in the
late sixties early seventies, was inaugurated in 1972. The campanile was
added later, and completed in 1997.
The church has a single nave with a
vault springing from entablature, the presbytery contains ana outstanding
grand altarpice depicting the Crucifixion realised in 1995 by artist
Angelo Pilloni. The 17 th century statue of Our Lady of The Rosary is also
af artistic interest, along with the sculptural group depicting St. Anne
with the Madonna, dating back to the 18 th century |
